Six percent of Australian High School Students Attracted to Same-Sex:  Survey
According to a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the Centre for Adolescent Health made the recommendation, saying that including gays in sex ed could address the high suicide rate of gay and lesbian students.

Centre officials told a student welfare conference that the view that being straight was 'normal' and being gay or lesbian something 'other' happens all the time in the school environment.

The Australian Research Centre for Sex, Health and Society agreed.

"Probably the most worrying [thing] for us in terms of schools, which are supposed to be supportive learning environments, [is that] they experience a great deal of abuse, and violence ... [at] school, and obviously feel very alienated," said Debbie Ollis.

Ms. Ollis also told the conference that the prevailing view noted above leads to increased drug use and depression among gay and lesbian students.
