HBO Omits Lesbians From Upcoming Cancer Special
Leading US Lesbian Cancer Organization Wants To Know Why
ONLINE:  TUESDAY MARCH 21, 3:21 PM EST (GMT-5).

The Mary-Helen Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer last week expressed serious concerns about the absence of information geared towards lesbians in (the US) Home Box Office's upcoming documentary, 'Cancer:  Evolution to Revolution.'

Throughout the documentary, which premiers on March 30, HBO will post contact info for National Cancer organizations, and the network has already set up a special website devoted to cancer information, help and activism.  The only national group whose mission is addressing the lesbian cancer epidemic, The Mautner Project for Lesbians With Cancer, is not listed among the resources people can contact.

"Discrimination is rampant in the healthcare arena and women-who-partner-with-women need to know there is a safe, confidential place to go to for cancer information, referrals and support," says Mautner Project Executive Director Kathleen DeBold.  "By adding The Mautner Project to their list of national cancer organizations, HBO can help save lesbian lives."

Although HBO has yet to reply to their numerous queries, The Mautner Project is still optimistic that HBO officials will understand the importance of their request.

"There are sins of commission and sins of omission," says DeBold.  "Given HBO's commitment to diversity and inclusion in its programming, we believe this is a sin of omission that they will correct before the show airs."

In response to the Mautner Project's 'Heed The Call' action alert network, thousands of people who care about lesbian health are contacting HBO to make the necessary changes in its Cancer program and Website.  (HBO can be reached through their website at www.hbo.com or by calling their Corporate Affairs Department at 212-512-1608).

"The enormous grassroots response to this situation is sending a clear message that cancer doesn't discriminate, and neither should HBO," says DeBold.

Now celebrating it's 10th anniversary, the Mautner Project is the only (US) national organization for lesbians with cancer.  In addition to providing direct services to lesbians with cancer, their families and caregivers, the Mautner Project provides information and counseling to the lesbian community about cancer; educates the healthcare community about the special concerns of lesbian families; and is a leading advocate for lesbian health issues.  The Mautner Project coordinates the National Coalition of Feminist and Lesbian Cancer Projects and is the organizer of 'Healing Works: the First National Conference On Lesbians and Cancer,' scheduled for September 21 to 23, 2000, in Washington, DC.
